Hill Day 2008 in Review


On June 17-18, more than 300 National Council members joined us in Washington, DC for the Fourth Annual Capitol Hill Day, making this year's event the largest to date.

Members from 39 states participated:

AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, PA, RI, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WY

Thank you to all who participated!

On June 17, interested participants listened in on the National Council's public policy committee meeting, where key Congressional aides and others provided in-depth updates on policy issues.  Eleanor Clift, contributing editor for Newsweek magazine and regular panelist on "The McLaughlin Group, addressed the group at lunch.

On June 18, members began the day with a breakfast briefing, led by former Michigan Senator Donald Riegle, Jr. Hill Day participants then proceeded to Capitol Hill to visit the Senators and Representatives from their home states.

This year, Hill Day focused efforts on five key issues:

Members also attended a congressional staff briefing sponsored by the Senate Mental Health Caucus. The briefing examined the alarmingly high incidence of early death and disability among persons with serious mental disorders served by public mental health agencies. Two participants in the National Councils Primary Care-Mental Health Collaborative Care project  Helen Royal, Colorado West Regional Mental Health Center, and Dr. Karen Wyatt, Summit CommunityCare Clinic, both  from Frisco, CO  testified at the briefing. Other speakers at the briefing included:

  • Joe Parks, MD, Medical Director, Missouri Department of Mental Health, Jefferson City, MO
  •  Barbara Mauer, MSW, MCPP Consulting, Seattle Washington

Linda Rosenberg, President and CEO of the National Council, served as moderator for the event.
