The SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions supports integration of primary care and behavioral health services to better address the needs of individuals with mental health and addiction disorders, whether seen in specialty behavioral health or primary care provider settings. The Center for Integrated Health Solutions is the national home for resources and expertise on all areas of bidirectional integration. Jointly funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Health Resources Services Administration and run by the National Council for Behavioral Health, the Center for Integrated Health Solutions provides training and technical assistance to community behavioral health organizations that received SAMHSA Primary and Behavioral Health Care Integration grants, community health centers, and other primary care and behavioral health organizations.
People living with mental illnesses and addictions can die decades before the general population — mostly from untreated and preventable chronic illnesses like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular disease that are aggravated by poor health habits such as inadequate physical activity, poor nutrition, smoking, and substance abuse. Barriers to primary care — coupled with challenges in navigating complex healthcare systems — have been a major obstacle to healthcare.
The Center for Integrated Health Solution’s wide array of training and technical assistance programs foster effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainable integrated services to improve the overall health and wellness of individuals living with behavioral health disorders.
The Center for Integrated Health Solutions increases the number of:
- Individuals trained in specific behavioral health related practices
- Organizations using integrated health care service delivery approaches
- Consumers credentialed to provide behavioral health related practices
- Model curriculum developed for bidirectional primary and behavioral health integrated practices
- Health providers trained in the concepts of wellness and behavioral health recovery.
