Trauma-Informed Care: The Trauma-Informed Organization

Consumer-Driven Services
Trauma survivors’ perspectives influence the organization’s policies, procedures, and services. Clients are engaged in formal and informal opportunities to shape the organization’s key functions.

Screening and Assessment
Early and ongoing opportunities are provided for people to talk about past and current traumatic experiences.

Safe & Secure Environments
Regular examination of an organization’s environment, policies, practices, and relationships prevent increased distress, stigma, and reactions that are experienced as re-traumatizing.

Services & Practice Guidelines
The organization provides a range of trauma-related evidence-based practices and services, including peer support, peer-involved, and wellness-promoting services.

Workforce Development
All staff members have ongoing opportunities to learn about trauma-informed care with emphasis on how each person plays a significant role in creating and maintaining a trauma-informed organization.

Community Outreach
The organization engages a variety of community organizations (e.g., law enforcement, healthcare providers, social service agencies) in education and advocacy to better address survivors’ needs.

Seclusion and Restraint
The use of seclusion and restraints is a safety measure of last resort – not a treatment. The organization understands its damaging effects and policies, practices, and procedures adopted to prevent harmful practices, including coercive practices and chemical restraint, and support healing.
