Dr. Satcher launched a major assault on the silence surrounding mental illness in 1999, when he released the first-ever Surgeon General’s report on the subject. As Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health from 1998¬ to 2001, Dr. Satcher also spearheaded the department’s effort to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in healthcare, an initiative that was incorporated as one of the two major goals of Healthy People 2010.
Today, he continues these battles as director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta. The Institute’s programs reflect Dr. Satcher’s commitment to defeating health disparities for underserved groups and shedding light on neglected issues, such as mental and sexual health.
Well-known and respected by the business, political, and medical communities, Dr. Satcher’s distinguished public service record also includes serving as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He has held leadership positions at several schools of medicine and received top awards from the National Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. In 2005, he was appointed to serve on the World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health.
