Later this spring, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee is expected to mark up the Melanie Blocker Stokes Moms Opportunity to Access Health, Education, Research, and Support for Postpartum Depression (MOTHERS) Act (S 1375). The MOTHERS Act will fund education and outreach activities to help providers identify women suffering from postpartum depression (PPD), and also creates new grant funding to help assure access to needed care. Opponents of this bill have been contacting Senate offices, arguing that the diagnosis of PPD is highly contentious and that Congress should not approve disease-specific legislation. The National Council urges all members in Massachusetts to contact Senator Edward Kennedy in support of S 1375 today.
