On the 10th Anniversary of MHPAEA, We Thank You
Today, we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 (MHPAEA).
We remember when too many doors were closed to those living with mental health and substance use challenges. When treatment was denied to those most in need. A time when the hope of recovery was dim for too many Americans.
And we remember how you, our members, fought with us to ensure equity – to secure equality. We are grateful for your support, then and now. It is our honor to represent you every day in our mission to safeguard the right of all Americans to have access to comprehensive, high-quality care that affords every opportunity for recovery. We are also grateful for former Congressman Patrick Kennedy’s leadership in the fight for parity; we would not be where we are today without his tireless, passionate commitment to improved behavioral health care.
Ten short years after the passage of parity, much work remains to strengthen the law and ensure its protections reach every single American in need of care. As we celebrate the tremendous victory that took place just 10 years ago, we must prepare for new battles and new opportunities to provide hope to the millions of people living with mental illness and addictions.
Thank you for all your efforts to ensure all have access to quality, affordable care when and where they need it.
