Coverage to Care: A New CMS Initiative

With 7.5 million Americans now insured through the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges, many of the newly covered find themselves navigating the world of provider networks, cost-sharing, and other complexities of health insurance for the first time. To ensure enrollees understand the features and unique benefits of insurance coverage obtained through the Health Insurance Marketplace, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) recently launched the national ‘From Coverage to Care’ (C2C) outreach initiative. C2C is comprised of a new guidebook and video series with extensive information around benefits, locating a provider, preventive services, and key steps to post-care follow up.

The eight-step guidebook, A Roadmap to Better Care and a Healthier You , is available in both English and Spanish, and assists consumers in using their new health insurance coverage — including understanding insurance cards, networks, and cost-sharing for medical services and prescription medications. CMS’ new resource also help direct enrollees on how to make an initial appointment, and details the essential “to do” items when preparing for a first-time health visit.

C2C’s 10-part video series provides additional advice on “making the most of coverage,” including such topics as “words to know” and guidance on finding the right provider and making an appointment. CMS is accepting questions, feedback or requests for professional print-ready versions of any of our resources at coveragetocare@cms.hhs.gov.
