MACRA: Summer Webinar Series Continues

The National Council’s Summer Webinar Series on MACRA continued this week with a deep-dive into the new Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). MACRA – the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 – made sweeping reforms to how physicians are paid under Medicare. The National Council is running a series of webinars to breakdown this payment structure and what it means for behavioral health providers moving forward.

Top takeaways from the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Survival Guide webinar included:

  1. Prepare for Change Now: MIPS will affect the majority of eligible clinicians who bill Medicare Part B, and it goes into effect on January 1, 2017—so now is the time to prepare!
  2. MIPS consolidates three existing quality programs and adds a new one: The new categories include: the Physician Quality Reporting System, the Value-based Payment Modifier, the Medicare Electronic Health Record Incentive program, known as Meaningful Use and the newly created Clinical Practice Improvement Activities. Each of the four categories are weighted and will collectively form a Composite Performance Score, which will be used to compare practices and inform payment adjustments, starting in 2019.
  3. Even if MIPS does not apply to you or your practice in 2017, it’s important to understand it.  Value-based payments are an important goal for all the major payers, not just Medicare. To meet these demands, all behavioral health organizations will need to cultivate an organizational culture that embraces change, and develop the infrastructure needed to measure progress, demonstrate value and improve health outcomes.
