Last week, House Republican leaders elected Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) of Oregon’s 2nd District to run the influential House Energy and Commerce (E&C) Committee. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) will continue to serve as Ranking Member. The House E&C Committee is the key health committee in the House of Representatives and should take center stage in efforts to repeal and replace tenets of the Affordable Care Act.

Greg Walden, a ten-term Congressman, most recently served four years as the Chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee where he had success helping the Republican Party secure historic majorities. After securing an impressive electoral win in November, he turned his sights on this key chairmanship for the 115th Congress. With the backing of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) and GOP Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Greg Walden was elected as the new chair in a closed-door election.

Current Chairman of the House E&C Committee, Fred Upton, said in a statement that “Energy and Commerce will be in great hands with my friend Greg Walden holding the gavel. Greg’s leadership with the Communications and Technology Subcommittee demonstrated his hard work and proven record of success. As we look toward a new year, a new Congress, and a new administration, the Energy and Commerce Committee will be leading the way on health reform, keeping energy affordable, and putting folks back to work.”
