Adaptation of the Drug and Drug Problems Perception Questionnaire to Assess Healthcare Provider Attitudes Toward Adolescent Substance Use

Connors et al. examined the internal consistency and factor structure of an adapted form of the Drug and Drug Problems Perceptions Questionnaire (DDPPQ) to assess providers’ perceptions of adolescent substance use. Initial evidence suggests that the adapted DDPPQ is appropriate for use with pediatric providers. The adapted measure was deemed internally consistent based on responses from a sample of 276 healthcare providers in various roles (CMA, RN, NP, PA, MD, clinical therapists, etc.). The self-reported frequency with which providers screen for alcohol and drug use was significantly correlated with their perceptions about adolescent substance use. Connors et al. suggest that the adapted DDPPQ be used to assess whether providers are ready to receive adolescent SBIRT training and that providers might be grouped based on their attitudes to encourage peer learning.
