Expanding Substance Use Prevention and Early Intervention in Schools: A Toolkit

This toolkit consists of 16 resources to expand school-based services for substance use prevention and early intervention – including through Project Amp, a peer-delivered model being implemented in schools across the country. Four resources focus on expansion strategies that highlight specific pathways and policies that have been used to expand school-based substance use services in states. Six tools are designed for engaging specific stakeholders and decision makers to answer common questions and make the case for substance use prevention in schools, including a fact sheet on the link between youth substance use and academic achievement, financing strategies, training resources, and a summary of the evidence-base for youth screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT). The final set of resources focuses on expanding Project Amp – a youth peer-delivered model. This includes tools on funding Project Amp, how Project Amp supports students in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and resources for promoting Project Amp with recovery community organizations, schools, school-based health centers, and state substance use service agencies.
