Connecting people to life-saving care is more important than ever. That’s especially true during COVID-19 when uncertainty and health concerns can intensify anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation.
In communities across the country, crisis call centers – like the 180+ members of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network – are stepping up to offer hope and help when it’s needed the most.
“The value of crisis call centers has always been enormous because of their ease of accessibility and callers’ feeling of safety,” said Meryl Cassidy, ACSW, LMSW, executive director of Response Crisis Center. “People call because they know they won’t be judged.”
As the only 24/7 crisis intervention and suicide prevention center and area provider for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in Suffolk County, New York, the Center has seen a 300% increase in volume on the Lifeline and Lifeline Crisis Chat in the past year. Whether online or over the phone, more people are getting connected to care.
“For any individual on a given day, you’re trying to do the best you can. You’re trying to figure things out. But the pandemic really heightened people’s vulnerabilities,” said Meryl. “Difficulty accessing services. Financial concerns. Relationship issues. Our callers have different needs.”
