From Training to Transformation: MHFA in Action

Published:

Since its founding 25 years ago, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) has grown from a single training course into a global movement advancing mental wellbeing.

To commemorate the program’s 25th anniversary, we sat down with MHFA International’s co-founder, Professor Tony Jorm, and Dr. Claire Kelly, director of international programs, for our Aug. 13 episode of Wellbeing Wednesdays.

Joined by Tramaine EL-Amin, vice president of Mental Health First Aid at the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, they discussed the transformational power of compassionate conversations and why mental health literacy is more critical than ever.

Here are five takeaways for the discussion:

  1. A Global Movement: MHFA began in Canberra, Australia, and has expanded to more than 30 countries, all while maintaining its core mission.
  2. Evidence-based Training with Real Impact: Research shows MHFA training boosts participants’ confidence in offering help and reduces stigma.
  3. A Lifeline in Times of Crisis: MHFA provides immediate support and connects individuals to appropriate resources during critical moments.
  4. Empowering Everyday People: Anyone can become a First Aider, helping to foster a culture of care and support in every community.
  5. A Call to Action: As mental health challenges rise, MHFA champions ongoing education, collaboration and advocacy to ensure support is accessible to all.
