National Council for Mental Wellbeing Releases Statement on $32 Million Gift From MacKenzie Scott

The unrestricted gift is the second from MacKenzie Scott since 2022

Washington, DC (Jan. 26, 2026) — The National Council for Mental Wellbeing today announced that it has received a $32 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

The unrestricted gift is the second in four years from Scott, who made a $7 million donation to the National Council in 2022. National Council President and CEO Chuck Ingoglia stated the following in response to Scott’s philanthropic support.

“We want to thank MacKenzie Scott for her generosity and the support for our work and the work of our members, which she has demonstrated by presenting us with this unexpected gift.  MacKenzie Scott is an American icon — a selfless advocate for people in need — and we are overwhelmed by her act of kindness.

“This gift arrives at a time of enormous need and gives us the flexibility to strengthen our organization and the services our members rely on to improve the delivery of mental health and substance use treatment and care in their communities.

“Scott’s gift underscores the importance of public-private partnerships, which are more critical than ever because private investments help to fill the gaps from diminishing federal resources.

“We are committed to investing this funding with care and intention. Over the coming months, we will outline a strategic plan to strengthen our core work and better support the communities we serve.

“The National Council defines mental wellbeing as a state of thriving. It is the foundation of living a strong, healthy and fulfilling life. We believe that mental wellbeing is achievable for everyone — including individuals living with or recovering from a mental health or substance use challenge. Together with our Board of Directors, we are committed to investing this funding in ways that create meaningful impact — strengthening our advocacy and public policy efforts, addressing the behavioral health workforce shortage, and advancing initiatives that improve public health and integrated care.”
