World Mental Health Day 2025: Talk, Share, Support!

Every year on Oct. 10, people and organizations around the world observe World Mental Health Day by raising awareness, starting conversations and inspiring action. It’s a moment to reflect on the importance of mental health and how supporting it benefits us all.

Mental health challenges touch everyone, directly or indirectly. In the U.S., nearly 30 million people — our neighbors, families and friends — lack access to the mental health and substance use care they need. The effects ripple outward, impacting schools, workplaces and communities. Here’s a snapshot:

  • 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition each year.
  • 1 in 6 youth (ages 6-17) face a mental health disorder annually.
  • 1 in 20 adults live with a serious mental illness that significantly disrupts daily life.
  • 3 in 5 adults with a mental illness did not receive care last year.
  • 1 in 2 adults with a mental health condition say stigma has affected their work, relationships or ability to access care.

Mental health isn’t just a personal concern — it’s a shared responsibility. Prioritizing mental wellbeing strengthens families and communities, and creates workplaces and neighborhoods where everyone can thrive, even as it helps individuals navigate life’s challenges.

So, what can we do to make a difference? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by having honest conversations with loved ones. Asking “How are you, really?” — and listening nonjudgmentally to the answer — can make a big impact. Share trusted resources so people know where to turn for help. And don’t forget to take care of yourself, whether it’s a walk outside, a meditation break or journaling.

Advocating for better mental health policies, getting trained in Mental Health First Aid or supporting organizations that expand access to care are other ways to take meaningful action. World Mental Health Day is a reminder that mental wellbeing connects us all. By talking, sharing, learning and supporting one another, we can help build a world where mental health is valued, accessible and prioritized — today and every day.
