For too long, individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis have been advised to go to hospital emergency departments. This overreliance on the emergency department as the “front door” for people experiencing or at risk for serious mental illness or serious emotional disturbance often results in delays in treatment and exposure to additional trauma, highlighting the need to expand and enhance the mental health and substance use crisis service system.
An effective crisis services continuum, with customizations for adult and child/family populations, provides all individuals in crisis a clear pathway for accessing care and options for how best to meet their needs. Our presenters will map out best practice crisis care pathways to discover alternatives to emergency departments that also address issues of safety, choice and personal freedom.
